(More customer reviews)I purchased this on 2 separate orders, and both times the cardboard/plastic package around the bulb was open and the bulb was loose in the[Amazon] box.They did work however,and provide a beautiful warm light in my mica desk lamp.I would give the bulb 5 stars and the packaging 0, if I could.I hope if Amazon gets in a new shipment of these the problem will have been corrected as I would like to order more.

(More customer reviews)I don't like my lights yellow, I don't like them blue. With that in mind, I bought just one of this CFL to check out. It has just a shade of that warm white (5000K instead of 5500K) to it which makes it ideal to use in a residential environment. Pictures taken using a digital camera under this light have come out nice looking - not bluish or yellowish. The difference in color rendering is also clear. So far the lamp hasn't had a high pitch whine which some of the other CFL's have been prone to.
The one thing keeping me from rating this lamp higher is slow startup. Takes at least a couple of minutes for the lamp to reach full brightness. For a 40 watt lamp, it also seems to emit slightly less lumens - but I gladly accept that for better quality light (Quality over Quantity).
Another thing to keep in mind that the lamp is fairly large (tall). This is after all a 40W CFL. Not all fixtures will accept this light w/o the lamp sticking out.
Beats the junk they sell in warehouse stores..

(More customer reviews)The 40W fluorescents (150-200W equivalent) are hard to find in most brick and mortar stores (they like to sell the smaller 40W and the 100W equivalents) so I was double-happy when I saw this one at Amazon. First, because Amazon carries it and second because it's available under super-savers' shipping.
Talking about the item itself:
- you WILL experience some delay when you turn it on but it's hardly noticeable, like maybe 1/10 of a second
- once it's on, unlike the 'cheaper' fluorescents that need to warm up, it shines at or close to full brightness immediately
- it's a bulky, significantly wider and longer than the 150W incandescent equivalents and it may not fit all fixtures where a regular 150W bulb used to fit
- does not work well with a dimmer - it's either on or off [I tried it with one and it did come on at full brightness but something is telling me that you may shorten its life when used this way]
- the light is bright, so bright, I would not stare at it directly - I did once and I saw 'ghosts' for the next 15-30 minutes
- the color of light is closer to 'solar' than what our 'incandescents' deliver, less yellow, more blue
- unlike neon lights, there's no flicker
- it consumes less power when compared to an incandescent
The above were my subjective comments. Here are the specs, as the manufacturer lists them:
- Light output: 2800 lumens
- Energy used: 42W
- Life: 8000 hrs.
- Color temperature: 6500K
- Electric charge: 610mAThe major issue I have with the fluorescents is their lifespan. Maybe I am unlucky but, after replacing nearly all my light bulbs in the house - a few dozen - they seem to burn out more often. My first couple 40W I bought a few years ago (a different brand), in fact, died after about one year, I hope this is not the case again because we are paying top dollar for these environmentally nice devices.
So far, I see no reason not to award this bulb 5 stars but, if it dies on me before 2-3 years, I promise to come back and update my review. For the record, the maker promises a 7-year lifespan and $152 (???) savings per bulb.

January, 2011 update:
On their 20th month, they (I bought a 2-pack) are as bright and shiny as on 'day one' and they've been on for many hours because I telecommute most of the time and my office is in the basement. I haven't done the math but it's likely that they've paid for themselves already.
I bought 2 more in December, 2009 and no burnouts yet.

(More customer reviews)I rarely write reviews but I felt compelled to write one for this product. I purchased this 7W LED bulb one month ago. Being an engineer, I spent a great deal of time reviewing LED bulbs before deciding to purchase this one. Before I provide my review of the LED bulb, I want to provide some clarification. Having read the other reviews where some people said that they received something different than what was pictured, I decided to e-mail Priority Energy and Lighting before I placed my Amazon order. I was pleasantly surprised that Paul Prior, the CEO and president of Priority Energy and Lighting e-mailed me back the very next day. He told me that they used to sell the frosted globe that is pictured above but he said that most people preferred the clear glass. Paul also said that I could still order the frosted glass version but I would have to go through their system and not Amazon's site. He said that the frosted version available through their system is 2,700K (yellow, warmer color, typical color of incandescent, and frosted). If you are interested in purchasing the frosted version, you can contact them at priorityled DOT com. I agree with other people that the photo of the LED bulb on Amazon's site should match exactly what people are going to receive. In the product description, they could let people know that the frosted version is also available but you have to go through Priority Energy and Lighting directly to purchase the frosted version.
Ok, now to my review of the clear glass 7W LED bulb that I ordered through Amazon and I knew was going to be clear before I placed my order. I am extremely happy with this bulb. It replaced a 13W Compact Fluorescent Light bulb (CFL) in a standard lamp that is the primary light in our living room. It definitely has the lumens to be a 60-70W replacement. Compared to the 13W CFL bulb that was in the lamp before, there is virtually no difference in lumens. As some people have mentioned, the light may be a little harsh depending on where it's going. For me, it went into a lamp that has a cream-colored shade and while the light is a little more white compared to the previous CFL (in the same lamp with the same shade), the difference is so minor that I don't think many people will notice much difference. Especially if it's going into a fixture with a shade covering it. If you are considering putting this LED bulb into a fixture that has no shade such as a bathroom vanity light, you might want to consider going directly to Priority Energy and Lighting to purchase the frosted version. As someone else mentioned, this LED bulb is a little big and it barely fit inside the lamp where the previous CFL easily fit. The LED bulb turns on immediately and there is no warm-up time or subtle flicker that some older CFL bulbs have. I could not be happier with this LED bulb and I would buy it again without hesitation. Since this LED bulb is in the primary lamp in our living room, we're saving 6W several hours each night compared to the 13W CFL bulb that we were previously using. I'm looking forward to when the price comes down so that I can buy more of this same bulb to replace other CFL bulbs that are throughout our house.
Update 11/23/10: We have been using this LED bulb for several hours every single evening now for over 6 months and it continues to work great. Zero issues and I would still buy it again without hesitation.

Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled that this thing shines like crazy. But the picture shows 2 bulbs and it only ships with one. Okay, fine, you got me...the description says "1 Pack", but like most other lazy Americans, I see a picture and grunt with approval. In this case, I grunted twice since the photo shows 2 bulbs.
When the package arrived, I breathlessly anticipated the joy I would have with me and my two light bulbs dancing through the streets together. As I unpacked the oversized Amazon box and rooted through the mounds of bubble wrap, the excitement in the room could be cut with a knife. My glee turned to sorrow as I realized the that there was too much of not enough bulb. Whomever perpetrated this cruel trick on humanity should be reported to the authorities, given the destruction of the 'kid on Christmas morning feeling' that I had when the package arrived.

These work perfectly for what they are intended for, but note that the beam is rather narrow (36") and that the inside coating is reflective, rather than translucent. I bought these for a chandelier with translucent glass shields, and I didn't realize that translucent bulbs are really important for this use. These reflect a greater amount of light towards the subject and thus less into the rest of the room through the translucent glass. But that was my bad, not the bulbs. The bulbs are, as I said, exactly what they say they are and I didn't sufficiently appreciate what I should have for my application.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this A60 Dimmable E26 Bulb because it specifically says 'dimmable'. Most CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) and LED lamps are not compatible with dimmer switches designed for incandescent bulbs. They will either be damaged immediately, or their life spans will be severely cut short when plugged into light sockets controlled by incandescent dimmers.
As it turns out, this LED lamps works very well:
- At 100% power, it emits a bright white light in the forward-facing direction. The color temperature is not quite as warm as a 60W incandescent bulb or a 'warm-white' CFL lamp, but is a lot warmer than the typical bluish light emitted from a 'pure-white' LED lamp.
- At the lowest power, the LED lamp dims down to less than 10% of its full brightness, while still maintaining the same color temperature. In contrast, a 60W incandescent bulb gives out a faint red glow at the same dimming level. (See my customer images for brightness comparison)
The dimming range of this LED lamp is superior to any so-called 'dimmable CFL' I have tried (which usually turns off below 30% power). However, there are several 'issues' you should be aware of. Some for this LED lamp in particular, others for LED lamps in general:
- This LED lamp contains a large heat sink that covers half of its body. The actual LED board is attached to the heat sink using two small screws. The problem is that their screw threads are all messed up and one screw fell out. Lucky for me I tested the lamp in downward-facing configuration, so I was able to spot the loose screw inside the glass dome. Had I tested the lamp in upward-facing configuration, the loose screw would land on the LED board and possibly ruin the lamp.
- The beam it produces is highly directional. The view angle is 165-degree, which is wider than a flood-light or a spot-light, but much narrower than an omni-directional (360-degree) incandescent bulb. What this means is if you use them in your chandelier with lamps facing upward, your ceiling will be brightly illuminated, but the area directly underneath will be quite dim. On the other hand, this directional beam makes it ideal for use in downward-facing recessed light fixtures.
- The total light output (luminosity) is only 260-300 lumens (*). Strictly speaking, this is only comparable to the luminosity of a 25-30W incandescent bulb. However, because the light from this LED lamp is concentrated in the forward direction, it appears much brighter than a 60W bulb - as long as you stay in front of the LED lamp.
Finally, let's consider the energy-saving claim of LED lamps. LED lamps currently on the market are 5-7 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs, but the price is very high at around $5 per watt. So it may take many years for the energy saving to offset your initial investment. For example: suppose you replace a 40W incandescent bulb ([标签:Content].50) with a 6W LED lamp ($30), and your electricity rate is [标签:Content].12 per KWh, then it will take nearly 7000 hours to make up the price difference. In contrast, CFL are 'only' 3-4 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs, but they cost much less. So if you replace a 60W bulb with a 14W CFL ($2.5), then it only takes 360 hours to get your money's worth.
This is not to say that you should not replace your ancient incandescent bulbs with more efficient light sources. Just that you must have a realistic expectation on the luminosity and efficiency claims of LED lamps in general. In some cases, CFL may be a better choice - just remember to recycle burnt out CFL bulbs properly.

I purchased my second LED bulb and it has the same brightness as the first one. So I can't tell whether the light output has always been 400 lumen, or this is just another example of creative 'Spec-men-ship'.

(More customer reviews)I am an engineer who has been completely disgusted with the home lighting situation. There are no standards and many misstatements and counterdictions at the stores. I own a Minolta flash meter which accurately measures a lights color temperature. I've tried the bulb technology at Walmart, Sams Club Home Depot and Lowes. The most glaring examples:
1) yellow light is called soft white (2700)
2) very blue light is called daylight 6000-6500)
3) 12W LED lights go for as much as $90!
4) Some bulbs are advertised as white but the chart on the back shows its yellow. Complete incompetence.
Here is not what to avoid: all (harsh washed-out blue) daylight, and (yellow) soft white. While GE Reveal offers somewhat better clarity its still overpriced and quite yellow.
Full spectrum (5000-5500) bulbs are a step-up but stores offer a very limited selection, like one! The Home Depot full 100w spectrum's beats the Lowe's Ott-Lite. The best compromise are the PAR38 indoor 23-27w 3500K reflector lights (which actually measure 4100K), especially for recessed kitchen spot lighting.
On the LED front Sam's Club carries a 520 lumen, 4100K, 9 LED PAR38 reflector which has a easily noticeable smoother light spectrum. Interesting for the one light on in the kitchen in the evening. The equivalent $70 LED lights at the hardware store are hardly a bargain, as the Sam's is $20! However its Color Retention index (CRI)is only 74.
The best of all are lights are these 5500K Alzo's. I've installed a 45w in the kitchen pantry and the color of the food boxes really pop. Food looks like it does in the magazines. The clarity is first rate (however 27w should be sufficient). They are the reference to which others are to be compared. My wife has not complained even when they are on at night-time. This is a first.
Skin tones in the bathroom look very natural. A first again.
Color temperature alone is not the sole basis to buy a bulb as a high CRI is also required. The Alzo's come in at 92, which is very high. Most manufactures do not even list this measurable figure (assume because its too low).
Well gotta go as my wife wants one in her closet now, as shes hates the other fluorescent lights which cause eye-strain. Should I install a 45w and blow her away?

(More customer reviews)At a little over 10 bucks for 8 of these, you can't go wrong.
These are just your basic CFLs, at the 2700 kelvin temperature range. That means they're about the same shade as your basic ordinary 60W incandescent bulb. A pale yellow white, not pure white (5100 Kelvin), or daylight (around 6300 Kelvin).
Pure white or daylight CFLS cost more because the phosphors in them are more expensive, but they do have the advantage of being more natural light, rather than imitating the poor quality light of an ordinary light bulb.
So if you're thinking of upgrading to CFLs these bulbs are a great deal to start from. But do take advantage of the technology & get a higher quality light at a higher color temperature for some of your areas, & enjoy better quality light, rather than just using CFLs that imitate the poor quality light of old fashioned light bulbs.
Winter depression can be triggered by lack of natural light because of less hours of daylight, & more cloudy, overcast days in winters. In northern climates when it's cold, people stay inside more, use heavy insulating window curtains, further reducing their exposure to natural light. 5100K-6700k CFLs help with winter depression by exposing you to more natural light. Colors look more rich & vivid. Things look more cheery. It's even easier to read under natural light.
I find I can read just as easy under a 4-watt 5100k CFL than a 13 watt 2700k CFL.
The backlight in your LCD display that you're probably reading this from is probably a 5100k-6700K bulb.
Look at the white areas on the screen & then look at your lighting in the room. Doesn't that ordinary light bulb or 2700K CFL look a lot more yellow by comparison?

(More customer reviews)Finally, a bright-enough LED par20. I replaced 50W halogens for almost the same light output. They dim great (Lutron electronic dimmer, don't know the model). They CAN be installed with halogens at the same time and will dim together fine, which is great for the undecided or for the ones who don't want to fully commit to a slightly colder color. (They aren't quite warm white, but close)
I'm sure that as my review ages, my rating will go down for them, but right now, these are hands down the best energy efficient par20 dimmables for the price. CFL dimmables do exist and cost half of these upfront, but they tend to die fast. Maybe I have bad luck, but dimmable CFLs are known to have much shorter lives when cycled often.
For me, the big win is that in California, energy is really expensive. For a typical bill, the last 100kWh of the month costs me 35 cents per kwh. These let me reduce electric consumption in kitchen lighting from 45kwH per month to 4kwH. That's $14 a month, or $168 a year. They'll pay for themselves pretty quickly, though I'm sure I'll leave them on more now.
The bulb is never more than slightly warm to the touch. My recessed lights are 18 inches above my head, so I could always feel the heat when under the halogens. It never bothered me, but with these, you won't get that.
Overall, the only downside for me is the slightly colder light temperature. Not quite as warm white as I'd like, but certainly not white. But the fuzzy feeling of saving money makes it warmer.
The light is a bit less diffused than a standard halogen, so it may create dark shadow spots depending on your setup. You can get around that by mix/matching these with halogens, and they'll still dim just fine.
